CBRE CHANGES LIVES: ONE SKIRT AND TIE AT A TIME

The economy in metropolitan Phoenix is progressing towards full recovery, and many businesses are now hiring again.  Yet, there are individuals throughout our community who still struggle to find work because they lack the tools, skills and clothing needed for a job interview or full-time employment.

To help our community get back to work, CBRE is collecting business clothes and donating the items to two local, non-profit organizations -- Fresh Start Women's Foundation and St. Joseph the Worker, which provide job training and career counseling to women and men.

HOW DO THE HOMELESS FIND JOBS? St JOE THE WORKER!
"Since I don’t really work in this space, I decided to go and visit St. Joseph the Worker ( www.sjwjobs.org) after a friend told me about the service. When the bell rings at St. Joseph the Worker, the atmosphere explodes with joy because we know that a client has just secured employment and has taken a significant step toward ending his or her homelessness. This moment in time allows our staff to celebrate the clients’ success and share in their joy by providing them with a gift card, bus pass, an...continued

Criminal Pasts Haunt Desperate Job Seekers

by Jahna Berry - Jun. 13, 2012 11:03 PM
The Republic | azcentral.com

Job seekers with rap sheets always have struggled to find work because of their criminal records. But extreme competition for jobs in the weak economy and increasingly sophisticated background checks are making it harder than ever.

It isn't just violent offenders and other felons newly released from prison who are being rejected by Arizona's employers. A misdemeanor or an old conviction is enough to cost a person a chance at landing a job. And tens of thousands of working-age Arizonans have that kind of record.

The recession and a grindingly slow economic recovery mean that most hiring managers have a bi...continued

Being a job seeker is stressful enough without the added weight of being a home-seeker too.

The challenging, but all-too-common duo makes up the bulk of St. Joseph the Worker’s clients. The nonprofit, located on Phoenix’s Human Services Campus, provides basic job services and employment resources for 1,500 client contacts per month. At least 75 men and women visit the office daily to create resumes, prepare for interviews in the clothing closet or secure bus passes for an interview or the job itself.

Mar. 13, 2012 09:06 AM
Special to The Arizona Republic

Donovan Wilson submitted this information:

At a time when the unemployment rate in Arizona and around the country ebbs more than it flows, a small non-profit organization in downtown Phoenix is using its resources to find a high percentage of area homeless men and women quality jobs that pay an average of $9.35 an hour.
Brent Downs, executive director at St. Joseph the Worker, said the 24-year-old organization's mission is simple.
"We help homeless men and women to gain employment and re-enter the community as productive citizens," Downs said. "Through St. Joseph the Worker, those who are committed to getting ba...continued
