Being a single parent is a challenge under the best of circumstances. Without an income, it can feel
impossible. Last year, "Emily" was laid off from her job and unable to find another one. One month and
then two went by and then Emily lost her apartment. She found a shelter to stay in but was unable to
keep her 13-year-old son with her. This was the first time the two of them had ever been separated.

St. Joseph the Worker's primary focus is helping people to help themselves. We provide people with the tools necessary to conduct successful job searches and support them in their efforts to better their lives.
St. Joseph the Worker helps individuals return to the workforce and become self-sufficient, productive members of society. During fiscal year 2010-2011, St. Joseph the Worker and our clients achieved the following successes:
- 422 individuals secured full-time, sustainable employment.
- $9.24 an hour was their average starting pay rate.
- 30% of the jobs secured offered benefits.
- 627 individuals received comprehensive assistance, including one-on-one job search assistance, work essentials, resources and referrals, as well as encouragement and support to pursue a self-sufficient lifestyle.
- 449 incarcerated individuals were taught job-search strategies and job- readiness to help them avoid homelessness or re-incarceration after their release.
- Volunteers dedicated 2,202 hours of direct service to help our hardworking clients in their search for quality employment.
St. Joseph the Worker is a small, privately funded 501(c)(3), non-profit organization located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, Arizona that has been operating since 1988.
