The weather was a bit chilly in the morning on Saturday, March 6, but soon the sun came out and Estrella Mountain was lush and green after all the rain the previous week. Wildflowers were beginning to bloom.
Everyone enjoyed Rick DeBruhl (formerly of Channel 12) as he emceed the Hike, reminding the crowd to stay hydrated, purchase raffle tickets and have a good time. Clients spoke to the crowd about how St. Joseph the Worker helped them get back on their feet. Participants got their t-shirts, snacks and water and then proceeded to the trail of their choice (6 miles, 2 miles or ½ mile).
After hiking, participants enjoyed fresh, hot breakfast burritos and then it was time to announce the raffle and team prizes. It was a tough decision on the part of the judges this year to determine the team with the most spirit. St. Patrick Catholic Community came out with a handmade sign and matching green bandanas. Several groups created their own cheers for the occasion. Rick DeBruhl oversaw a final "showdown" between Shadow Mountain High School, Zip Realty and Rancho Solano Private Schools. It was a close race with Rancho Solano taking home the award. The other two contenders were honored as runners up, a first at the Hike for the Homeless.
Many thanks to all who participated and supported with time, money and resources to make this event a success!
Special thanks to our parking volunteers from the Madison Street Veterans Association!
